History
Origins
The Chamonix Valley was populated since ancient times by Celtic and Allobrog tribes before integration into the Roman Empire; In 1091, Count Aymon I of Geneva ceded the valley to Benedictine monks, who founded the priory that administered rural and livestock life for centuries.
Development
The valley was opened to the world in 1741 after the visit and stories of the British explorers William Windham and Richard Pococke, fascinated by the 'Mer de Glace'. In 1786, Michel-Gabriel Paccard and Jacques Balmat achieved the historic first ascent of Mont Blanc, prompting the creation of the prestigious Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix in 1821 and attracting the European aristocracy.
Modern era
Host of the first-ever Winter Olympic Games in 1924, Chamonix completed engineering milestones such as the Aiguille du Midi cable car (1955) and the Mont Blanc Tunnel (1965). Today it is the planetary benchmark for freeride, ultra-endurance trail running (UTMB) and mountain tourism 365 days a year.

Walk from Montenvers to Plan de l'Aiguille (Grand Balcon Nord)
Take the train from Montenvers in the morning, visit the Mer de Glace and take the spectacular 2.5-hour walk along the 'Grand Balcon Nord' to the mid-station of the Aiguille du Midi to descend by cable car, enjoying continuous views of the glaciers.
Mountain Spirit and 'Bonjour'
On hiking trails it is a universal and unbreakable rule of courtesy to greet each hiker you meet with a 'Bonjour' or 'Bonne journée'.
Respect for Night Rest
In the mountain refuges and in the town, silence prevails from 10:00 p.m., since mountaineers begin ascents to glacial peaks between 2:00 and 4:00 in the morning.
Sun Protection and Glacier Glasses (Cat. 4)
At high altitudes and glaciers, the ultraviolet radiation reflected from the snow is extreme; It is imperative to wear specific high mountain category 4 sunglasses and SPF 50+ sunscreen to avoid 'snow ophthalmia' (temporary blindness due to a corneal burn).
Spring and Tap Water
Tap water throughout the valley is 100% drinkable, fresh and pure, coming directly from the alpine springs.
Caution in High Mountains and Off-piste
Never venture on glaciers such as the Vallée Blanche or off-piste without avalanche rescue equipment (DVA, shovel, probe, harness) and preferably with a certified guide from the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix.
Acclimatization and Rapid Depressurization
The cable car to the Aiguille du Midi ascends 2,800 meters in just 20 minutes until reaching 3,842 m; walk slowly, drink water and do not force your heart rate to avoid dizziness or mountain sickness.
