History
Origins
Originally inhabited by the Lebu people, the Cape Verde Peninsula was an area of fishing villages before the arrival of Europeans in the 15th century, who competed for strategic control of the coast.
Development
Dakar was officially founded in 1857 by the French. In 1902, it replaced Saint-Louis as the capital of French West Africa, becoming one of the most important ports and administrative centers on the continent.
Modern era
Since independence in 1960, Dakar has grown exponentially as the diplomatic, cultural and economic center of West Africa, hosting international events such as the Biennale of Contemporary Art (Dak'Art).
