Historia

History

Origins

Delhi has a history dating back more than 3000 years, being mentioned in the Mahabharata as the city of Indraprastha. Over the centuries, it has been conquered and ruled by various civilizations, including the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire, which left an impressive architectural legacy.

Development

During the Middle Ages, Delhi became an important political and cultural center. In the 17th century, the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan founded Shahjahanabad, today known as Old Delhi. In 1911, the British decided to move the capital of India from Calcutta to Delhi, which led to the construction of New Delhi.

Modern era

In the 20th century, following India's independence in 1947, Delhi experienced explosive urban growth, becoming a modern megacity. Today, it is a key political, economic and cultural center in the world.
