The Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo is a living museum, the place where European history in America began. Explore its cobblestone streets, fortresses and churches, and feel the pulse of history around every corner.

The Samaná Peninsula offers lush landscapes, waterfalls like El Limón and virgin beaches. The central highlands are home to Pico Duarte, the highest in the Caribbean, for the more serious hiker. And the 27 Charcos de Damajagua are an injection of adrenaline.

Explore the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo

Walk the cobblestone streets where the first city in the Americas was founded. Visit the first cathedral, the first fortress and the first university in the New World. It is an open-air museum that takes you back five centuries.

Dance Merengue and Bachata

Music is everywhere. Take a dance class or simply go to a 'colmado' (neighborhood store that is also a bar) or a nightclub to feel the rhythm. Dancing is the best way to connect with the local culture and the joy of its people.

Spot Humpback Whales in Samaná

Between January and March, thousands of humpback whales come to Samaná Bay to mate and give birth. Taking a boat trip to see their waterfalls and listen to their songs is an overwhelming and unforgettable natural spectacle.

Excursion to Saona Island

One of the most popular excursions and for good reason. Sail on a catamaran to this idyllic island, enjoy a barbecue on the beach, dance to the rhythm of merengue and swim in a natural pool in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. It is a day of total paradise.

Adventure in the 27 Charcos of Damajagua

For adrenaline lovers. It consists of an excursion through the jungle to climb, slide and jump through a series of 27 waterfalls and pools of crystal clear water. It is an exciting and refreshing way to experience the country's nature.

Live a Baseball Game (Ball)

Baseball, or 'ball', is the national passion. Attending a Dominican Winter League game (October through January) is an electrifying cultural experience, filled with music, fervor, and incredible energy.

Tips for Culture & Heritage

Currency

The official currency is the Dominican Peso (DOP). The US dollar (USD) is widely accepted in tourist areas, but it is often more convenient to pay in pesos for everyday purchases and get better prices.

Transport

For long distances, bus companies such as Caribe Tours or Metro are comfortable and reliable. For short journeys, 'motoconchos' (moto-taxis) are ubiquitous, but always negotiate the price before getting on. There are also taxi and VTC services.

Bargaining

At craft markets and with street vendors, haggling is a common and expected practice. Always do it with a smile and in a respectful manner.
