History
Origins
A Ligurian and later Roman settlement, Genoa grew as a trading hub on the gulf that bears its name, linking northern Italy with Mediterranean routes.
Development
In the Middle Ages and Renaissance it rivalled Venice as a naval and financial power. The Rolli palaces and Via Garibaldi embody that golden age.
Modern era
Today it is Italy's leading container and cruise port, with a revitalised historic centre, Renzo Piano's Porto Antico waterfront and rising interest in Ligurian food and the nearby Riviera.
