History
Origins
Founded on June 24, 1478 by Juan Rejón, at the head of the troops of the Crown of Castile. The city, originally called 'Real de Las Palmas', quickly became a strategic enclave. Christopher Columbus stopped here on his first voyage to America in 1492, an event that forever marked the city's Atlantic vocation and is commemorated in the Casa de Colón.
Development
Over the following centuries, the city grew as an important commercial and supply port on the transatlantic routes. The development of Puerto de la Luz in the 19th century, promoted by British companies, consolidated it as a vital communications hub and gave it a cosmopolitan air, visible in neighborhoods such as Ciudad Jardín.
Modern era
The tourist boom of the 60s transformed Las Palmas, developing a modern service city around Las Canteras Beach. In recent decades, it has undergone a profound revitalization of its historical heritage and has established itself as one of the main destinations in the world for digital nomads, attracted by its quality of life and its exceptional climate.
