Discover the rich history, art and traditions of Spain

Spain is a country located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, known for its rich history, vibrant culture, exceptional gastronomy, and diverse landscapes.

Festivals & Events

Flamenco

Spain is dotted with cities that are authentic open-air museums. Madrid, the vibrant capital, with its Art Triangle. Barcelona, the capital of Gaudí's modernism. Seville, the heart of Andalusia, with its flamenco charm. Beyond the big ones, gems like Toledo (the city of three cultures), Salamanca (with its golden university), Segovia (with its Roman aqueduct), or Santiago de Compostela (the destination for pilgrims) will transport you to other eras.

With nearly 8,000 kilometers of coastline, there is a beach for every traveler. The Mediterranean offers everything from the secluded coves of the Costa Brava and the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza) to the extensive sandy beaches of the Costa del Sol. The southern Atlantic, on the Costa de la Luz, is a paradise for windsurfing. The north, bathed by the Cantabrian Sea, features wild and spectacular landscapes, such as the Playa de las Catedrales in Galicia or the surfing beaches of the Basque Country and Cantabria. And we cannot forget the Canary Islands, with their volcanic black sand beaches and their spring-like climate all year round.

Spain is one of the most biodiverse countries in Europe. The Picos de Europa offer a spectacular alpine landscape between Asturias, Cantabria, and León. The Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, in the Pyrenees, is a hiker's paradise. The Doñana National Park, in Andalusia, is a crucial wetland for migratory birds. In the Canary Islands, the Teide National Park is home to the highest peak in Spain and a volcanic landscape that seems from another planet.

Going for Tapas: Gastronomy in Miniature

The tapa is a religion in Spain. It's not just about eating; it's about socializing. It consists of going from bar to bar, trying small portions of culinary delights accompanied by a 'caña' (small draft beer), a wine, or a vermouth. Cities like Granada, León, Logroño, or San Sebastián are temples of 'tapeo' (the act of eating tapas). It is the most authentic way to immerse yourself in local life, sharing conversations and laughter while discovering the country's gastronomic richness in small bites.

Experiencing the Passion of Flamenco

Born in the heart of Andalusia, flamenco is a visceral art that expresses the deepest emotions of the human soul: love, sorrow, joy, tragedy. Attending a show in a 'tablao' in Seville, Jerez de la Frontera, or in the Sacromonte neighborhood of Granada is a cathartic experience. The 'quejío' (plaintive cry) of the singing, the virtuosity of the guitar, and the power of the dance will leave you breathless.

Discovering the Heritage of Al-Andalus

For nearly eight centuries, much of the peninsula was under Muslim rule. This legacy, known as Al-Andalus, left an architectural and cultural heritage of incalculable value. The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, with its forest of columns; the Alhambra of Granada, a dreamlike palace; and the Giralda of Seville are the crown jewels of a heritage that can be felt in the flowered patios, the whitewashed alleys, and the gastronomy of the south.

Getting Lost in a Popular Festival

Spain is a country of festivals. Every town, every city, has its own celebration that fills the streets with music, color, and tradition. From the explosion of fire and gunpowder of Las Fallas in Valencia, through the solemnity and art of Holy Week in Seville or Zamora, to the wine battle of Haro or the famous Tomatina in Buñol. Experiencing a popular festival is to understand the joy and devotion of the Spanish people.

Walking a Stretch of the Camino de Santiago

Whether for spiritual, sporting, or cultural reasons, the Camino de Santiago is one of the most important pilgrimage routes in the world. Walking even a small stretch allows you to connect with nature, discover medieval villages with unique charm, and become part of a community of pilgrims from all over the world. The landscape changes dramatically from the Pyrenees to the majestic Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.

Exploring a Local Market

Visiting a market like La Boquería in Barcelona or the Mercado de San Miguel in Madrid is a feast for the senses. It's the perfect place to see, smell, and taste the quality of local products, from exotic fruits and fresh seafood to hams and cheeses. It is a vibrant microcosm of Spanish life and gastronomy.

Schedules

Spaniards live on a later schedule than the rest of Europe. Lunch is usually between 2:00 PM and 3:30 PM, and dinner not before 9:00 PM. Many small shops close at midday (the famous 'siesta'), although large chains and shopping centers usually have continuous hours.

Internal Transport

Getting around Spain is easy. The high-speed train network (AVE) connects the main cities quickly and efficiently. There is also an extensive and affordable bus network. To reach the islands, there are numerous domestic flights and ferries.

Language

The official language is Castilian (Spanish). However, in some autonomous communities, there are other co-official languages, such as Catalan in Catalonia, Galician in Galicia, and Basque in the Basque Country. In tourist areas, it is common to find people who speak English.
