History
Origins
Originally inhabited by the Tongva and Chumash peoples, it was officially founded in 1781 by Spanish settlers under the name 'El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula'.
Development
After being part of Mexico, the city was annexed by the United States in 1848. Its great demographic and economic explosion came at the beginning of the 20th century, driven by the discovery of oil and, above all, by the birth of the film industry, which found the perfect place to film in the sunny climate of Hollywood.
Modern era
After World War II, Los Angeles established itself as a vast metropolis and a global center for commerce, technology ('Silicon Beach') and culture. Home to two Olympic Games, the city today is a magnet for creatives and entrepreneurs from around the world, defined as much by its immense diversity and innovative spirit as by its challenges, such as traffic and inequality.

Go Hiking, not a Van Tour
Instead of paying for a van tour to see famous houses, take a hike through the canyons of Beverly Hills or the Hollywood Hills. You'll see the mansions, exercise, and enjoy incredible views for free.
Explore an Ethnic Neighborhood
Go beyond Hollywood. Spend an afternoon eating in Koreatown, exploring the markets of Little Ethiopia, or sampling the food of the San Gabriel Valley (LA's real Chinatown).
Tip is Mandatory
In restaurants and bars, a tip of 15-20% of the total bill is expected. It is not optional, since it is part of the staff salary.
The Style is Casual
Despite the glamor of Hollywood, the general dress code is very relaxed and casual. Jeans and a t-shirt are acceptable in most places.
The Sun is Strong
Use sunscreen every day, even if it's cloudy. The California sun is very intense.
Tap Water is Drinkable
It is safe to drink, although many locals prefer filtered or bottled water for its flavor.
Never leave anything in the car
Vehicle thefts are extremely common. Don't leave anything visible, not even a jacket or some coins. Take everything with you or hide it in the trunk BEFORE you reach your destination.
Get to know the neighborhoods
Security varies greatly from one neighborhood to another. Educate yourself about the areas you plan to visit and be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.
