History
Origins
Founded by the Celts under the name Mediolanum, it was conquered by the Romans in 222 BC, becoming a key city and, briefly, the capital of the Western Roman Empire. The Edict of Milan in 313 AD. legalized Christianity in the empire.
Development
During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, under the rule of the powerful Visconti and Sforza families, Milan flourished as one of the richest and most influential duchies in Europe. It was during this time that Leonardo da Vinci lived and worked in the city, leaving an indelible legacy, including 'The Last Supper'.
Modern era
After centuries of foreign domination, Milan became a nerve center of Italian unification in the 19th century. It led the country's industrial revolution and, after the devastation of World War II, rebuilt itself to establish itself as the undisputed financial, fashion and design capital of Italy, a symbol of innovation and global style.

Discover the Courtyards ('Cortili')
Many buildings in the center hide beautiful interior patios. Be respectful, but don't hesitate to look out if you see an open door. The Brera neighborhood is full of them.
Flamingos in the City
Visit Villa Invernizzi (near Porta Venezia) for a surprise: a colony of pink flamingos lives in its garden, visible from the street through the fence.
Appearance Matters
In the fashion capital, people dress well. You don't need to go fancy, but a neat style ('la bella figura') is appreciated, especially for dinner or a night out.
Punctuality is a Virtue
Unlike other parts of Italy, in Milan, a business city, punctuality is important and expected.
Attention in Busy Areas
Pickpockets are the main problem, especially in Piazza del Duomo, in the Galleria and on the busiest metro lines. Keep your belongings safe and visible.
Central Station at Night
As in many big cities, use caution around the Central Station ('Stazione Centrale') late at night.
