Festivals & Events

Namib-Naukluft National Park is the epicenter of the oldest desert on the planet. The dunes of Sossusvlei, such as the famous Dune 45, Big Daddy and Elim Dune, contrast with the white basins of Deadvlei and the canyon carved by the Sesriem River. Further south, the NamibRand Nature Reserve offers golden plains and exclusive star safaris.

Etosha National Park is one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in Africa for self-drive safaris. In the extreme northeast, the Caprivi Strip (Zambezi) changes the desert for mighty rivers (Okavango, Zambezi, Chobe) with hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes and dense tropical vegetation.

Damaraland captivates with its red granite formations at Spitzkoppe (the 'Matterhorn of Africa') and prehistoric petroglyphs carved by Bushman hunters thousands of years ago at Twyfelfontein. Nearby are the Petrified Forest and the strange basalt columns of the Organ Pipes.

Climb Dune 45 and Walk through Deadvlei at Sunrise

In the heart of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the sunrise turns the giant dunes of Sossusvlei into fiery shades of orange and red. Walking on the white, cracked clay of Deadvlei among the dark skeletons of over 900-year-old petrified acacia trees, surrounded by the imposing Big Daddy Dune, is one of the most striking visual experiences in Africa.

Go Safari in the Etosha Water Ponds

Etosha National Park revolves around its immense white salt flat visible from space. During the dry season, the best safari strategy is to park your vehicle next to natural and artificial ponds (such as Okaukuejo or Olifantsrus) and watch herds of zebras, giraffes, oryx, herds of elephants and stealthy lions and leopards parade by to drink.

Explore the Ghost Town of Kolmanskop

Near Lüderitz, in the heart of the forbidden diamond zone (Sperrgebiet), Kolmanskop was a prosperous mining town with a casino, hospital and theater at the beginning of the 20th century. Abandoned in the 1950s, today the desert sand has invaded the interior of the colonial mansions, creating a surreal and photogenic atmosphere frozen in time.

Track Desert-Adapted Fauna in Damaraland

The dry channels of the ephemeral Huab and Aba Huab rivers in Damaraland are home to extraordinary animals that have learned to survive without water for weeks: desert elephants, free-ranging black rhinos and aridity-adapted lions. Traveling through these volcanic plains in a 4x4 in search of their footprints is pure expedition adventure.

Peeking into the Abyss of Fish River Canyon

In the south of the country, this gigantic canyon, 160 km long and up to 550 meters deep, cuts through the rocky plateau like a colossal wound in the earth. Viewpoints like Hobas offer dizzying views over the meanderings of the canyon, especially at dusk when the limestone and basalt walls light up with copper tones.

Know the Himba Culture in a Respectful Way

In the arid lands of Kaokoland in northwestern Namibia, the semi-nomadic Himba people preserve their ancestral traditions. Visiting a local village with a native guide allows you to understand their community organization, the cult of the sacred fire ('Okuruwo') and the use of 'otjize' (a mixture of milk butter and red ocher powder with which they protect their skin and sculpt their hairstyles).

Tips for Culture & Heritage

4x4 Vehicle Rental and Driving

Most of the country's roads are gravel roads. You drive on the left. It is highly recommended to rent a 4x4 all-terrain vehicle (many equipped with a roof tent for free camping). It is crucial to check the tire pressure depending on the terrain, carry two spare wheels and do not exceed 70-80 km/h on dirt tracks to avoid skidding.

Planning and Reservations Months in Advance

Hotel infrastructure and campsites within the national parks (especially in Sesriem/Sossusvlei and Etosha camps such as Okaukuejo) are limited and in very high demand. It is recommended to reserve the accommodation and the 4x4 vehicle between 6 and 12 months in advance during high season.

Currency and Payments (Namibian Dollar and South African Rand)

The official currency is the Namibian Dollar (NAD), which is pegged 1:1 to the South African Rand (ZAR). Both currencies are accepted interchangeably throughout the country. Credit cards are accepted at gas stations, hotels and large supermarkets, but it is mandatory to carry enough cash for tips, tolls and remote stores.
