Historia

History

Origins

Before the arrival of Europeans, the area was inhabited by the Lenape tribe. In 1624, the Dutch founded the settlement of New Amsterdam on the southern tip of Manhattan, which became an important trading post. In 1664, the English took control and renamed it New York, in honor of the Duke of York.

Development

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the city grew exponentially as a major commercial port and the main entry point for millions of immigrants to the United States. The construction of its iconic street grid and the first skyscrapers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries defined its urban landscape, making it a symbol of modernity and ambition.

Modern era

After World War II, New York established itself as an undisputed world capital in finance, diplomacy (with the headquarters of the UN) and culture. Despite crises such as that of the 1970s and the tragedy of September 11, 2001, the city has demonstrated a remarkable capacity for resilience and reinvention, remaining one of the most influential and dynamic cities on the planet.

Tips for Culture & Heritage

Explore the Other Districts

Don't stay alone in Manhattan. Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx have vibrant neighborhoods, great food, and a more local atmosphere.

Cross the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan

For the best skyline views as you walk, start in Brooklyn (DUMBO) and walk toward Manhattan.

Fast Pace

Walk to the right on the sidewalk and don't stop suddenly in mid-step. If you need to stop, step aside.

Be Direct and Concise

When ordering in a store or a cafe, be clear about what you want. Efficiency is valued above formalities.

Tap Water is Excellent

New York tap water is high quality and perfectly drinkable. Refill your bottle to save money and plastic.

Essential Travel Insurance

The US healthcare system is extremely expensive. It is absolutely crucial to travel with comprehensive health insurance that covers any emergency.

Surveillance in Crowded Areas

The main risk is pickpockets in places like Times Square or on the subway. Carry your bag closed and in front.

Common Sense at Night

Avoid walking through parks or dimly lit streets late at night. If you travel on the subway at dawn, stay in the cars with the most people.
