Matisse Museum
Museum dedicated to Henri Matisse in a 17th century Genoese villa in the Cimiez neighborhood, which houses the most complete collection of the master from his beginnings to his latest works. History
Origins
Nice was founded around 350 BC. by the Greeks of Marseille with the name Nikaia, in honor of the goddess Nike to celebrate a victory over the Ligurians. During the Roman era it developed as Nicaea, a strategic commercial port on the Via Julia Augusta that connected Italy with Spain. Its unique geographical position between sea and mountains made it a crossroads of Mediterranean civilizations, preserving Greek, Roman and later Italian influences that still persist in its architecture and culture.
Development
During the Middle Ages and until 1860, Nice belonged to the County of Savoy and later to the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, developing a distinctive cultural identity between France and Italy. The 18th century brought the European aristocracy who discovered the benefits of the Mediterranean climate, especially the English who built the famous promenade. The annexation to France in 1860 marked the beginning of its modern tourist development, becoming a favorite destination for artists, writers and European royalty.
Modern era
In the 20th century, Nice established itself as the artistic capital of the Côte d'Azur, attracting great masters such as Matisse, Chagall, Picasso and Renoir who found constant inspiration in its exceptional light. The city developed a luxury tourism infrastructure, international airport, world-renowned festivals and a flourishing cultural industry. Today Nice is a modern metropolis that preserves its belle époque heritage while leading Mediterranean cultural tourism.
