Nosara, located on the Nicoya peninsula within one of the five 'Blue Zones' of longevity on the planet, is a coastal paradise where the tropical jungle merges directly with virgin beaches of the Pacific. Famous for the consistency of its year-round waves at Playa Guiones, its prestigious international yoga and wellness centers, and the mass nesting of olive ridley turtles at the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, Nosara is a global model of sustainability, healthy living and 'Pura Vida'.

Historia

History

Origins

The region was originally inhabited by the indigenous Chorotega people, farmers and skilled artisans of polychrome ceramics and jade who lived in close harmony with the cycles of the ocean and the estuaries of the Nosara and Montaña rivers.

Development

In the 1970s, an innovative urban project led by American investors (the 'Nosara Civic Association Project') established pioneering zoning regulations: construction was prohibited within 200 meters of the high tide line and protected biological corridors were created to preserve the coastal rainforest.

Modern era

Become a benchmark for barefoot luxury ecotourism, Nosara attracts surfers, yogis, families and digital nomads from around the world, standing out for its strict commitment to marine conservation, clean energy and an organic lifestyle.

Tips for Culture & Heritage

Low Tide in the Pools of Playa Pelada

Check the tide table and visit the northern end of Playa Pelada at absolute low tide to immerse yourself in natural pools of warm sea rock as if they were natural private jacuzzis.

Surf at Dawn ('Dawn Patrol') in Screenplays

Enter the water at 5:45 AM at Playa Guiones: you will enjoy the cleanest and most orderly waves of the day under a gentle breeze with the sun rising over the jungle and the singing of the howler monkeys in the background.

The 'Pura Vida' Philosophy

'Pura Vida' is not just a greeting or farewell; It is an attitude towards life based on gratitude, calm, kindness and patience.

Strict Rules on the Ostional Turtle Tour

It is mandatory to enter Ostional beach accompanied by a local accredited guide from the Ostional Guides Association (AGLO), wearing dark clothing and without using photographic flash or white lights.

'Reef-Safe' Sunscreen

Only use biodegradable mineral sunscreens based on zinc oxide (without oxybenzone or octinoxate) to avoid damaging fragile corals and marine fauna when swimming.

Insect and Dust Repellent

Bring ecological mosquito repellent for walks along jungle trails at sunset and a scarf/buff to protect yourself from dust on dry roads if you travel by quad.

Rip Currents in Surfing

Playa Guiones has a soft sandy bottom but rip currents can form; If you are caught in a current, stay calm, do not swim against it and swim parallel to the shore until you leave the channel.

Be careful with belongings on the beach

Never leave cameras, cell phones, backpacks or purses unattended in the sand while surfing or swimming, nor leave valuables visible on quads or parked cars.
