Historia

History

Origins

Originally inhabited by the Gurung and Magar ethnic groups in the surrounding hills and by the Newar community in the valley, Pokhara was a crucial crossing point on the trans-Himalayan trade routes linking India to Tibet.

Development

In the 18th century it became part of the unified kingdom of Nepal under the Shah dynasty. In the 1950s, the arrival of Tibetan refugees and the opening of the first roads transformed the valley, boosting textile crafts and local trade.

Modern era

Since the 1970s, with the arrival of the hippie movement and the rise of mountaineering on the Annapurna Circuit, Pokhara evolved to become the epicenter of ecotourism, extreme sports and wellness in the Himalayas.

Tips for Culture & Heritage

Sunrise in Sarangkot without Crowds

Instead of staying on the main platform of Sarangkot, continue walking 10 minutes further towards the ruins of the ancient fort (Kaski Kot) to enjoy the sunrise in total solitude.

Relaxing Afternoon at Lake Begnas

Take a local taxi to Lake Begnas at midday, rent a boat to cross to the small family restaurants on the other side of the lake, and enjoy a leisurely lunch with views of the mountain reflections.

The Traditional Greeting

Bring your palms together at chest level and bow your head slightly saying 'Namaste'; It is the most respectful and appreciated way to say hello and thank you.

Spin the Prayer Wheels

In Buddhist stupas and monasteries (such as the Shanti Stupa or Tibetan settlements), always walk and turn the prayer wheels clockwise.

Drinking Water Consumption

Don't drink tap water. Use sealed bottled water or refill your canteen with purifying filters at Lakeside's 'Safe Water' points.

Massages for Post-Trekking Recovery

Take advantage of Lakeside's many Ayurvedic massage and reflexology centers to relieve muscle overload after descending the Annapurna trails.

Certified Paragliding Companies

Pokhara is one of the best destinations in the world for tandem paragliding; Make sure you hire the activity through agencies authorized by the CAAN (Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal).

Caution When Swimming in Phewa Lake

Swimming is not recommended in the areas near Lakeside due to the constant boat traffic and the presence of currents or mud on the bottom; opt for Lake Begnas for safe swimming.
