History
Origins
Before the arrival of the Spanish, the region was inhabited by several indigenous groups, mainly from the Aztatlán culture. Unlike other parts of Mexico, it was not a large ceremonial center, but rather an area of villages along river valleys.
Development
The city was founded in the mid-19th century under the name of Las Peñas de Santa María de Guadalupe. For decades, it was a small fishing town and a port for shipping silver from nearby mines in the Sierra Madre. Its isolation preserved its small-town charm.
Modern era
The transformation of Puerto Vallarta began in 1963 with the filming of John Huston's film 'Night of the Iguana'. The worldwide attention generated by the romance of its stars, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, put PV on the international tourist map. Since then, it has grown to become a major tourist destination, known for its natural beauty, thriving arts scene, and as a celebrated safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community.

If you're in town between October and May, don't miss the Wednesday night Art Walk, when El Centro's main galleries open their doors and often serve cocktails.
Tips are the norm
A tip of 10-15% is expected in restaurants. It is also customary to tip buskers, supermarket baggers, and wait staff.
Try to Speak a Little Spanish
Although English is widely spoken, an effort to use basic Spanish phrases like 'Hello' and 'Thank you' is greatly appreciated and will open doors for you.
Bottled water
Don't drink tap water. All restaurants and hotels use purified water and ice, so they are safe.

The Pacific sun is strong. Use high factor sunscreen. At night, especially in the rainy season, use mosquito repellent.
