Its spectacular skyline, the largest port in Europe and a multicultural and pragmatic energy define it. From the iconic Cube Houses and the futuristic Markthal to its vibrant art and food scene, Rotterdam is a city that does not look to the past, but rather uses it as a foundation to build a bold and exciting future.

History
Origins
The history of Rotterdam began in the 13th century with the construction of a dam ('dam') on the Rotte River, from which its name derives. For centuries, it was a modest fishing town.
Development
Its growth accelerated with the expansion of its port, but it was the 19th century that consolidated it as a center of trade and maritime transport of global importance.
Modern era
May 14, 1940 is the date that defines modern Rotterdam. A devastating German bombing (the 'Rotterdam Blitz') annihilated its historic center. This trauma became a unique opportunity: instead of recreating the past, the city opted for a radical and modern reconstruction, becoming a laboratory of urban planning and architecture. This spirit of 'maken' and looking forward remains at the heart of the city's identity. Today, it is a global center for logistics, design and sustainability.
