History
Origins
Founded as the Roman 'Hispalis' and later renamed 'Ishbiliya' under Muslim rule, Seville flourished as one of the most important cultural and economic centers of Al-Andalus.This legacy is visible today in its architecture, especially in the Real Alcázar and the Giralda.
Development
After the Reconquista, Seville reached its zenith in the Golden Age. By becoming the exclusive port for trade with the Americas, it became the richest and most cosmopolitan city in Europe, attracting artists such as Velázquez, Murillo and Cervantes and leaving behind an incalculable monumental heritage.
Modern era
The Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 redrawn the south of the city with the iconic Plaza de España and the María Luisa Park.Later, the 1992 Universal Exhibition (Expo '92) modernized its infrastructure, bequeathing new bridges and revitalizing the Cartuja Island.
