History

Origins

The area has been the territory of numerous indigenous nations for thousands of years, including the Huron-Wendat, the Haudenosaunee, and, most recently, the Misisogas of the Credit. In the 18th century, the French established a trading post, but modern settlement began with the founding of Fort York by the British in 1793.

Development

Throughout the 19th century, the city, renamed Toronto, grew to become a major immigration center and economic engine for Canada. Its development accelerated as a railway and industrial center, attracting waves of immigrants from Europe who began to forge its multicultural character.

Modern era

Following World War II, Toronto experienced massive growth, surpassing Montreal as Canada's largest city and financial center. It continued to attract immigrants from all over the world, becoming the archetype of a global and multicultural metropolis. Today, it is a global leader in finance, technology, film and culture, known for its progressivism and high quality of life.
