Historia

History

Origins

Originally inhabited by the nomadic Yámanas (or Yaganes) canoeists for thousands of years, who survived in extreme conditions adapted to the frigid climate and the resources of the sea.

Development

At the end of the 19th century, the Argentine government established a penal colony to ensure sovereignty. The prisoners built the city and the famous 'End of the World Train' to transport wood from the forests.

Modern era

In 2026, Ushuaia will consolidate itself as the most important Antarctic logistics hub in the world and an elite tourist center that balances industrial development with the conservation of its unique ecosystem.
