Festivals & Events

Mount Yasur on Tanna Island is the most famous volcano, but Ambrym Island (the 'Black Island') is home to the colossal active craters of Marum and Benbow with lakes of boiling lava within a 12 km desert lunar caldera. On the island of Lopevi, its perfect volcanic cone emerges directly from the depths of the ocean.

Espiritu Santo is the largest and most diverse island. Champagne Beach dazzles with its white sand and effervescent waters at low tide; Port Olry offers thatched cottages and restaurants on the turquoise water in front of green islets; and the network of 'Blue Holes' (Nanda, Riri, Matevulu) constitutes one of the most photogenic freshwater phenomena in the world.

In addition to the colossal SS President Coolidge wreck and Million Dollar Point in Santo, Vanuatu has pristine reefs teeming with marine life: reef sharks, manta rays, turtles and dugongs (sea cows) on the protected shores of Epi Island and Shepherd Islands.

Feel the Roar of the Earth on Mount Yasur

Located on the island of Tanna, Mount Yasur is the most accessible active volcano in the world. After ascending in a 4x4 vehicle through plains of black ash and walking a few minutes to the edge of the crater, visitors contemplate a few meters away Strombolian explosions that launch bombs of incandescent lava into the night sky. The seismic roar that shakes the ground and the red glow above the smoke cloud make up an unforgettable telluric experience.

Witness the Ancestral Ritual of Naghol (Land Diving)

Between April and June, on Whitsun Island, 'Naghol', the legendary tribal precursor to bungee jumping, takes place. The men of the village build colossal towers of wood and intertwined branches up to 30 meters high. As a test of bravery and a ritual to ensure a prosperous yam harvest, the jumpers jump headlong into the void tied to their ankles only by elastic vines calculated to the millimeter, brushing the ground with their shoulders while the tribe sings and dances.

Dive the Mythical SS President Coolidge and Million Dollar Point

On the coast of Luganville (Espiritu Santo) lies the SS President Coolidge, a luxurious ocean liner converted into a US troop transport ship sunk by mines in 1942. At 200 meters long, it is one of the largest diveable wrecks on the planet, where you can explore wineries with military jeeps, cannons and the famous porcelain statue 'The Lady'. A short distance away, Million Dollar Point displays tons of war machinery, tanks and excavators dumped into the sea after the war.

Immerse yourself in the Turquoise Magic of the Blue Holes

The eastern coast of Espiritu Santo is home to springs of fresh underground water filtered through layers of limestone rock for decades. Water holes such as Nanda Blue Hole, Riri Blue Hole or Matevulu Blue Hole dazzle with their crystal-clear water of a phosphorescent cobalt blue tone, surrounded by dense tropical vegetation, where sliding on rope vines or paddling in traditional wooden canoes is a true natural balm.

Venture into the Depths of Millennium Cave

Considered Vanuatu's greatest trekking adventure, the Millennium Cave expedition in the jungle interior of Espiritu Santo guided by indigenous communities combines hiking along bamboo trails, climbing through rock canyons, traversing underground through a 50-meter-high cavern inhabited by bats and swallows, and floating down a river through a pristine jungle gorge.

Sharing the Kava Ritual in a Nakamal

As evening falls, in both rural villages and Port Vila, a lit lantern indicates the opening of a 'Nakamal' (the community meeting house). Drinking a 'shell' (half a coconut) of Kava freshly pressed from fresh roots is a sacred social act. The drink produces a mild numbness on the tongue and a deep feeling of relaxation and inner peace, which is enjoyed in darkness and respectful silence while conversing with the locals.

Tips for Culture & Heritage

Nakamals Etiquette and Kava Consumption

Kava in Vanuatu is significantly more potent than in Fiji or other Pacific islands. When visiting a 'Nakamal', one should keep a low tone of voice and speak in a whisper, as kava induces a special sensitivity to loud noises and bright light. It is drunk in a single gulp ('bottoms up') and the residue is usually spit out on the ground outside as a traditional sign of respect.

Domestic Flights and Baggage

To travel between the different islands (Efate, Tanna, Espiritu Santo, Pentecost, etc.) the only quick option is internal flights operated by the national airline Air Vanuatu or charter flights by small plane. Cancellations or schedule modifications due to weather conditions are common, so it is essential to leave days of margin in the itinerary and travel with soft luggage that does not exceed 10-15 kg on internal flights.

Currency, Payments (Vatu) and No Tips

The official currency is the Vanuatu Vatu (VUV). In Port Vila and Luganville, credit cards are accepted in hotels and large diving operators, but as soon as you go to outer islands (Tanna, Pentecost, etc.) or rural villages, cash is essential. In Vanuatu culture, tipping is traditionally neither practiced nor expected, as is haggling in markets, which is considered impolite.
