View full guideKava in Vanuatu is significantly more potent than in Fiji or other Pacific islands. When visiting a 'Nakamal', one should keep a low tone of voice and speak in a whisper, as kava induces a special sensitivity to loud noises and bright light. It is drunk in a single gulp ('bottoms up') and the residue is usually spit out on the ground outside as a traditional sign of respect.
To travel between the different islands (Efate, Tanna, Espiritu Santo, Pentecost, etc.) the only quick option is internal flights operated by the national airline Air Vanuatu or charter flights by small plane. Cancellations or schedule modifications due to weather conditions are common, so it is essential to leave days of margin in the itinerary and travel with soft luggage that does not exceed 10-15 kg on internal flights.
The official currency is the Vanuatu Vatu (VUV). In Port Vila and Luganville, credit cards are accepted in hotels and large diving operators, but as soon as you go to outer islands (Tanna, Pentecost, etc.) or rural villages, cash is essential. In Vanuatu culture, tipping is traditionally neither practiced nor expected, as is haggling in markets, which is considered impolite.
