History
Origins
With more than 3,000 years of documented history, ancient Kashi is considered the earthly abode of the god Shiva. During the first millennium BC, it flourished as a center of religion, philosophy, astronomy and Vedic medicine, as well as being the place where Buddha delivered his first sermon in neighboring Sarnath around 528 BC.
Development
Despite suffering successive destructions and reconstructions during medieval invasions and Mughal rule, it experienced a great cultural and urban revival in the 18th century under the Maratha rulers and the local kings of Kashi, who rebuilt most of the temples and the majestic stepped ghats that we see today.
Modern era
Currently, Varanasi balances its ancient spiritual legacy with modernization projects such as the monumental corridor of the Kashi Vishwanath temple, consolidating itself as the most important pilgrimage and cultural tourism destination in India.
