City: Venice

Venice, the capital of the Veneto region, is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, only canals, including the Grand Canal, lined with Gothic and Renaissance palaces. It is a city of impossible beauty, a labyrinth of alleys, bridges and squares that seems frozen in time. From its iconic gondolas to its dazzling art, Venice is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a testament to a glorious maritime history and a fragile world treasure.

Historia

History

Origins

Founded by populations fleeing barbarian invasions after the fall of the Roman Empire, the Venetians built their city on the swampy islands of the lagoon to protect themselves. This unique location determined their destiny.

Development

During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Republic of Venice ('La Serenissima') became a formidable maritime power and commercial hub connecting Europe to the East. This wealth financed an incredible artistic flourishing, with masters such as Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese, and dazzling architecture.

Modern era

After losing its independence to Napoleon and becoming part of Italy in 1866, Venice faced a new challenge: mass tourism. Today, it struggles to preserve its fragile heritage in the face of rising sea levels ('acqua alta') and the pressure of millions of visitors, maintaining its status as a global cultural icon.

Tips for Culture & Heritage

Get up at dawn

To see St. Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge without the overwhelming crowds, you have to go very early in the morning. The experience is magical.

Explore the least visited 'sestieri'

Get lost in Cannaregio, Castello or northern Dorsoduro to see real Venetian life, with clothes hanging between buildings and children playing in the squares.

Dress appropriately for churches

To enter St. Mark's Basilica and other churches, you must cover your shoulders and knees.

Don't sit anywhere

It is prohibited to sit on the ground, on the steps of bridges or monuments in St. Mark's Square. The fines are high.

Get ready to walk

Venice is explored on foot. Wear very comfortable shoes. It is a physically demanding city due to the number of bridges.

Drinking water

Tap water is drinkable. You will find public fountains in many squares ('campi') to refill your bottle.

Getting lost is part of the plan

Don't stress if you get lost. Yellow signs will always guide you back to key points like 'Rialto' or 'San Marco'. Enjoy the discovery.

Beware of the crowds

On the narrow streets, keep your belongings safe. Walk on the right to facilitate the flow of people.
