History
Origins
Originally inhabited by Māori tribes such as the Ngāi Tara, the area is known in Māori tradition as Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui (the head of the Māui fish). The settlements focused on the resources of the port and the surrounding forests.
Development
Founded by British settlers in 1840, Wellington was chosen as the capital in 1865 due to its central location, replacing Auckland to prevent the southern regions from separating. It became a key administrative and commercial center.
Modern era
Today it is a global technological and film hub, nicknamed 'Wellywood'. He has led social and cultural movements in the Pacific, maintaining a balance between his political role and his bohemian and artistic identity.
