Historia

History

Origins

For centuries, Zanzibar was a vital enclave for Assyrian, Phoenician and Arab traders. It became the center of Swahili culture, thriving on the trade in spices, ivory and, tragically, slaves.

Development

In the 19th century, the Sultanate of Oman moved its capital to Zanzibar, boosting clove production. Later, it became a British protectorate, maintaining an architectural and social mix unique in the world.

Modern era

After the 1964 revolution, Zanzibar became independent and joined with Tanganyika to form Tanzania. Today it is a top tourist destination that strives to preserve its fragile ecosystem and UNESCO heritage.

Tips for Culture & Heritage

Tides

Download a tidal app. On the east coast, the sea can retreat up to 1 km, leaving lagoons ideal for seeing starfish but impossible for swimming.

Sunsets

The best sunsets are in Nungwi, Kendwa or from a sunset Dhow cruise in Stone Town.

Ramadan

During the holy month, many local restaurants close during the day. Avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public out of respect.

Photos

Always ask permission before photographing locals, especially women and children.

Malaria

Zanzibar is a risk area. Use repellent, sleep under a mosquito net, and ask about prophylactic medication.

Water

Always drink bottled water, even to brush your teeth if you have a sensitive stomach.

Cultural Respect

Zanzibar is 95% Muslim. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) off the beach to avoid offenses or fines.

'Papasi' guides

Beware of unofficial guides (papasi) who approach you on the street. Always book tours through official agencies or hotels.
