North Beach vs. Central Beach
Central Beach has darker sand and is next to the bridge; North Beach (Severen Plazh) is wider, has finer sand and gathers the liveliest music beach bars.
Sunset on the Pier
The best free plan at dusk is to buy a craft ice cream on Bogoridi, walk down to the Burgas Bridge and stroll to its end to take in the silhouette of the coast.
Bulgarian Body Language
Watch out for gestures! In Bulgaria, nodding up and down usually means 'no', while shaking the head from side to side means 'yes'. Tourism staff are used to foreigners, but with local people it can lead to funny misunderstandings.
Visiting Orthodox Churches
To enter the Cathedral or churches, you need to dress respectfully (shoulders and knees covered) and keep your voice low. It is common to buy and light a thin wax candle.
Tap Water
Tap water in Burgas is drinkable and safe, although many residents prefer to drink bottled mineral water from renowned Bulgarian springs such as Devin or Bankya.
Medicinal Mud with Caution
If you visit the Lake Atanasovsko salt pans, don't leave the black mud on your skin for more than 20-30 minutes before washing, and avoid contact with your eyes because of the very high salt concentration.
Excellent General Safety
Burgas is a quiet city with a remarkably low crime rate; walking late at night in the center and parks poses no usual danger.
Reliable Taxis
Avoid getting into unmarked taxis at the airport or stations. Use well-known companies with a meter (such as Eco Taxi or Burgas Taxi) or mobile apps.
