Founded in the 5th century AD. By King Vakhtang Gorgasali, who according to legend discovered the sulfurous hot springs ('tbili' means warm in ancient Georgian), the city quickly grew as a strategic enclave on the Caucasus and Silk Road trade routes.
Over the centuries, Tbilisi was contested, destroyed and rebuilt by Persians, Byzantines, Arabs, Mongols and Ottomans. Its revival during annexation to the Russian Empire in the 19th century introduced elegant neoclassical avenues and modernist (Art Nouveau) buildings that blended with traditional Caucasian courtyards and balconies.
After the Soviet dissolution and the Rose Revolution in 2003, Tbilisi underwent a profound urban modernization. Today it is one of the most dynamic destinations in the region, standing out as a creative hub of electronic music, independent art and innovative gastronomy.
