Je l'ai déjà été !Explora el fascinante pasado de Penang y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Before the arrival of Europeans, Penang Island was inhabited by Malay fishermen and was a stopping point for Arab, Indian and Chinese merchants. There are no major vestiges of ancient civilizations, but its strategic position in the Strait of Malacca made it a coveted enclave for regional trade.
In 1786, Captain Francis Light founded George Town on behalf of the British East India Company, establishing the first British port in Southeast Asia. Penang became a key commercial center, attracting Chinese, Indian and European migrants. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the city grew rapidly, developing a colonial infrastructure and a multicultural society. The island was occupied by Japan during World War II and, after Malaysia's independence in 1957, Penang continued its development as an industrial and tourist hub.
In the 20th century, Penang established itself as an important economic and technological center, with the development of industrial zones and the Penang port. In 2008, George Town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, revitalizing its cultural tourism. Today, Penang is recognized for its innovation, quality of life and as a premier food and arts destination in Asia.
