Je l'ai déjà été !Explora el fascinante pasado de Colombo y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Known to Roman, Arab and Chinese traders more than 2,000 years ago, Colombo was a strategic port for the cinnamon and gem trade. Its name probably derives from the Sinhalese 'Kolon thota', which means port on the Kelani River.
The city was successively occupied by the Portuguese (1505), the Dutch (1656) and the British (1796). Each power left a deep architectural and cultural mark, transforming the port into the administrative center of the island.
After independence in 1948, Colombo has evolved rapidly. Despite the challenges of the civil war (ended in 2009), the city is currently experiencing an infrastructure boom, with massive projects such as Port City that seek to turn it into a regional financial hub.
