Legend attributes the founding of the city to a mythical ruler named Krakus, who built it over a cave inhabited by the Dragon of Wawel. Historically, in the 10th century, it became an important commercial center and in the 11th century it was named the capital of Poland.
Krakow's golden age occurred between the 14th and 16th centuries under the Jagiellonian dynasty. The city flourished as a center of commerce, culture and science; Here Copernicus studied at the Jagiellonian University, one of the oldest in Europe. Wawel Castle was transformed into a dazzling Renaissance palace.
When the capital moved to Warsaw in 1596, Kraków began a slow decline. During World War II, the city became the capital of the Nazi General Government. Although it was spared physical destruction, its large Jewish population was wiped out in the Holocaust. After the communist era, Krakow has reaffirmed its status as Poland's main tourist and cultural center, attracting millions of visitors with its beauty and history.
