The origins of Český Krumlov date back to the 13th century, when it was founded by the influential Rosenberg family, who built the castle on the Vltava River and established its emblem, a five-petal rose.
During the Middle Ages and until the end of the 16th century, Český Krumlov prospered under the rule of the Rosenbergs and later passed into the hands of the Habsburg, Eggenberg and Schwarzenberg families, establishing itself as an important political and cultural center.
