Before the 15th century, the island of Madeira was uninhabited, although it already appeared on Portuguese maps of the 14th century. The official rediscovery occurred in 1418, and the founding of Funchal is attributed to João Gonçalves Zarco, who began its settlement in 1424 under the mandate of King João I of Portugal. The name 'Funchal' comes from the abundance of fennel (funcho in Portuguese) that grew in the area. There is no evidence of human occupation prior to the arrival of the Portuguese.
In the 16th century, Funchal became an important Atlantic port, key in the sugar and wine trade between Europe and the colonies. The city prospered quickly thanks to the fertility of its volcanic soils and its strategic position, although it also suffered attacks from privateers, such as the French sacking of 1566. In the following centuries, British influence, especially in the wine trade, transformed its economy and architecture. Funchal received city status in 1508 and established itself as the political and cultural center of Madeira.
Since the end of the 19th century, Funchal became a destination for the European elite, attracted by its climate and landscapes. In the 20th century, the development of tourism modernized the city, improving its infrastructure and services. Today, Funchal is a cosmopolitan city, with an international airport, a university and a diverse cultural and gastronomic offer. Tourism continues to be the main economic engine, although the city maintains its historical and natural identity.
