The region where Monterrey is located today was inhabited by nomadic and semi-nomadic indigenous groups before the arrival of the Spanish. There were no large-scale pre-Hispanic settlements, but the area was traveled by hunter-gatherers. The Spanish founding of Monterrey occurred in 1596, when Diego de Montemayor established the city with the name Metropolitan City of Our Lady of Monterrey, in honor of Viceroy Gaspar de Zúñiga y Acevedo, Count of Monterrey. The first years were marked by indigenous resistance, floods and the lack of mineral resources, which limited its initial growth.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, Monterrey grew slowly, remaining a small border town. In the 19th century, the city experienced significant growth thanks to its strategic position and the development of agriculture and livestock. During the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), Monterrey was occupied by American troops. In the late 19th century, the arrival of the railroad connected the city to Laredo, Texas, spurring industrialization and attracting foreign investment. By 1900, Monterrey was already an important industrial center, with steel, textile, beer and flour factories.
The 20th century consolidated Monterrey as the industrial engine of northern Mexico. Despite natural disasters such as the great flood of 1909, the city continued to grow, especially after the construction of the Pan-American Highway in the 1930s. In recent decades, Monterrey has transformed into a global city, with a diversified economy, modern infrastructure, and growing international influence. Today it is recognized for its innovation, quality of life and leadership in sectors such as technology, manufacturing and services.
