Founded in 1548 by Spanish conquistadors on the site of an indigenous settlement called Chuquiago Marka. Its location was chosen to protect itself from the extreme climate of the Altiplano and as a strategic point on the gold and silver route.
During the colonial and republican era, La Paz established itself as the commercial and political center of Bolivia. Its growth was marked by the mixture of European neoclassical architecture with the deep roots of the Aymara and Quechua cultures.
In the 21st century, La Paz has transformed into a modern and avant-garde city, notable for the implementation of 'Mi Teleférico', which revolutionized urban transportation, and the emergence of 'Cholet' architecture in neighboring El Alto.
