The West Coast (St. James and St. Peter Parishes) boasts calm, deep turquoise waters and luxury resorts, notably Paynes Bay, Sandy Lane and Mullins Beach. On the South Coast, beaches such as Accra Beach (Rockley), Miami Beach (Enterprise) and Dover Beach combine white sand and an excellent range of beachfront bars with small breaks ideal for bodyboarding.

In the parish of St. Joseph, the landscape changes radically towards a pristine and dramatic nature. Unlike most neighboring volcanic islands, Barbados is a plateau of emerged coral stone. Barbados is the birthplace of commercial rum. Visiting the historic Mount Gay Distilleries (formally founded in 1703) or the Foursquare Craft Distillery provides insight into the centuries-old processes of copper still distillation and aging in American oak barrels, culminating in guided tastings of world-famous aged rums.

In the mountainous center of the island lies one of the greatest geological jewels of the Caribbean. Harrison's Cave is a crystallized limestone cavern system accessible via an underground eco-tram. Built in 1658, St. Nicholas Abbey is one of only three surviving Jacobean mansions in the Western Hemisphere. Surrounded by sugar cane fields and mahogany forests, the estate features a traditional cane mill, a high-end rum microdistillery, and a historic steam railroad that ascends to the Cherry Tree Hill scenic overlook.

Strict Ban on Camouflage Clothing

In Barbados it is strictly prohibited by law for civilians (including children and foreign tourists) to wear military camouflage printed clothing, pants, caps, backpacks or accessories. The use of this print is reserved exclusively for the Barbados Defense Forces and customs police will confiscate these garments upon arrival at the airport.

Driving on the Left and Transport 'ZR'

You drive on the left side of the road (British heritage). To rent a car, a temporary local driving license is required, which is processed by the rental agencies themselves. To get around the south and west coast economically and authentically, private minibuses known as 'ZR vans' (white vans with a maroon stripe) run continuously with reggae music at a very low fixed price each way.

Currency and Payments (Barbados Dollar and USD)

The official currency is the Barbados Dollar (BBD), which has an official fixed exchange rate pegged to the US Dollar of 2 BBD = 1 USD. US dollars in cash are universally accepted in all establishments, taxis and restaurants on the island. International credit cards are widely accepted in shops and hotels.
