The river valleys of Oman are true paradises. Wadi Shab stands out for its caves with waterfalls; Wadi Bani Khalid seduces with its large natural pools suitable for bathing all year round; and Wadi Tiwi amazes with its palm groves and vertical gorges. For trekking lovers, the Jebel Shams canyon and the rose-growing terraces in Jebel Akhdar offer unforgettable high mountain landscapes.

Wahiba Sands offers a complete desert immersion with dunes that change hue from gold to deep red. For the most experienced expeditioners, the Rub al-Khali ('The Empty Quadrant') on the southern border represents the largest continuous sea of sand on the planet, a mythical territory crossed by ancient explorers.

Oman has more than 500 castles and fortresses. Highlights include Bahla Fort (a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its 12km adobe walls), Jabreen Castle with its painted ceilings and noble reception halls, and the majestic Nizwa Fort with its gigantic circular cannon tower.

Spending the night in a traditional Bedouin camp or bivouac allows you to admire one of the most intense sunsets in the Middle East and a night sky free of light pollution.

Experience the Friday Livestock Market in Nizwa

The ancient capital of Nizwa hosts a traditional livestock auction every Friday morning that has not changed in centuries. Mountain shepherds parade goats, sheep and cows in a circle of sand while buyers haggle loudly. It is a vibrant and genuine immersion into rural Omani life.

Sail on a Dhow through the Musandam Fjords

In the extreme north of the country, separated by the Emirates, the enclave of Musandam offers spectacular maritime landscapes where limestone mountains fall steeply into turquoise waters. Embarking on a dhow (traditional wooden boat) allows you to anchor in hidden coves, spot groups of dolphins in the wild and snorkel among coral reefs.

Peeking into the Abyss at Jebel Shams

Known as the 'Mountain of the Sun', Jebel Shams is the highest peak in Oman (3,009 m). From its viewpoints you can contemplate the immensity of the Wadi Ghul canyon, a gap with more than 1,000 meters of vertical drop. The 'Balcony Walk' route skirts the cliff along old shepherd's paths to an abandoned village in the rock.

Dress Code and Cultural Respect

Oman is a welcoming but conservative country. Outside resorts and private beaches, dress modestly: both men and women should cover shoulders and knees. To visit mosques (including the Grand Mosque of Muscat), women must completely cover their arms, legs and hair with a scarf, and men must wear long pants.

Vehicle Rental and 4x4 Driving

To explore the country at your leisure, it is essential to rent a car. The main roads are impeccably paved and illuminated. However, to access most wadis, climb Jebel Akhdar (where there is a mandatory police check) or enter the dunes of Wahiba Sands, a 4x4 off-road vehicle is required by law or safety.

Currency and Payments (Omani Rial)

The official currency is the Omani Rial (OMR), one of the strongest currencies in the world divided into 1,000 baisa. International credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, supermarkets and restaurants, but you need to carry some cash to pay at traditional souks, fruit stalls, remote gas stations and for tips.
