I've been there!Explora el fascinante pasado de Kingston y descubre cómo se ha desarrollado a lo largo de los siglos.
Kingston was founded in 1692 by survivors of the earthquake that destroyed Port Royal, the former capital and main port of Jamaica. Before its founding, the region was inhabited by the indigenous Taíno people, who were displaced after Spanish colonization in the 16th century. The city was established on safer and more stable ground than Port Royal, which had been destroyed by a natural disaster and pirate attacks.
During the 18th century, Kingston grew rapidly as a commercial center after the decline of Port Royal. In 1716 it was already the largest city in Jamaica and in 1872 it became the administrative capital of the island, displacing Spanish Town. The city suffered several disasters such as hurricanes, fires and epidemics, but continued to expand and consolidate as an economic and political nucleus. The founding of Wolmer's School in 1729 marked a breakthrough in local education.
In the 20th century, Kingston faced the devastating 1907 earthquake that destroyed much of its historic center. The city subsequently modernized and expanded, becoming a world-renowned cultural center for reggae and Jamaican music. Today, Kingston is a dynamic metropolis that combines urban development with a strong cultural and social identity, being home to important educational and economic institutions in Jamaica and the Caribbean.
