It is a city defined by the rhythm of salsa escaping from the windows, the roar of classic American cars, the aroma of tobacco and rum, and the unwavering energy of its people. Tips for Budget

Stay in a 'Casa Particular'

It is the best way to experience Cuban culture. You stay in a room in a local family's house. They are affordable, comfortable, and the hosts are an incredible source of information.

Go to the Cuban Art Factory at night

It's not just a museum. It is the most vibrant and modern place in Havana. Arrive early to avoid the long lines.

Tip is very important

State salaries are very low. A small tip (around 10%) for waiters, guides and musicians makes a big difference and is greatly appreciated.

Ask permission to take photos

Be respectful when taking photos of people, especially close-up portraits. They will often ask you for a small tip in return, especially if they are dressed in traditional costumes.

Bring your own medications and toiletries

Shortages are common. Don't count on being able to buy things like pain relievers, Band-Aids, sunscreen, or toilet paper. Bring it all with you.

Drink only bottled water

Never drink tap water. Make sure the bottles you buy are well sealed.

Beware of the 'Jineteros'

They are people who approach tourists to offer them services (cigars, restaurants, taxis). They can be kind but very persistent. A polite but firm 'No, thank you' is the best response.

Common scams

Be wary of cheap cigar offers on the street (they are often fake) and always check your bill in restaurants. Ask for a menu with prices to avoid surprises.
