Very affordable for independent travelers: food, lodging, and local transport go a long way.

Street food and night markets offer delicious meals for very little money.Transport by 'songthaew' or renting a motorbike is very cheap.Great offer of affordable hostels and guesthouses.
Prices at luxury beach clubs, high-end restaurants and five-star resorts are high.Excursions to the islands can be expensive.Taxis and tuk-tuks can have inflated prices for tourists.

Food Scene

98

A gastronomic paradise. Southern Thai cuisine is famous for its rich, spicy flavors, with an emphasis on fresh seafood.

World class street food available at all hours.Fresh and delicious seafood at reasonable prices.Night markets that are a feast for the senses.High quality Thai cooking classes.
Restaurants on the beachfront are usually more expensive and of lower quality than those on secondary streets.

Transport

60

Public transportation is the weak point of the island. It is chaotic, often expensive for tourists and not very efficient.

'Songthaews' (blue vans) are a cheap way to get around on fixed routes.Apps like Grab are available and offer clearer prices than taxis.
Tuk-tuks are famous for charging exorbitant prices to tourists. There is no bus network that covers the entire island efficiently.Renting a motorcycle is the most popular way to get around, but also the most dangerous.

Tips for Budget

Explore the North of the Island

Most tourists are concentrated in the south. The northern beaches, such as Mai Khao (where you can watch the planes land) or Nai Thon, are much quieter and unspoiled.

Visit the Phuket Town Weekend Market

Known as Naka Market, it is a huge and vibrant market where you will find second-hand clothing, souvenirs, and a spectacular food section. It is the best market experience on the island.

Respect the King and Religion

Monarchy and Buddhism are two pillars of Thai society. Never speak ill of the King or the royal family (it is illegal) and dress respectfully when visiting temples (shoulders and knees covered).

Don't touch anyone's head

The head is considered the most sacred part of the body. Avoid touching anyone's head, even a child's, as it is considered disrespectful.

Travel Insurance

It is absolutely essential. The healthcare system for tourists is private and expensive. Make sure you have insurance with good medical coverage.

Mosquito Repellent

Use repellent, especially at dawn and dusk, to protect yourself from bites and diseases such as dengue.

Do not Rent a Motorcycle without Experience

Phuket roads are dangerous. If you don't have experience riding a motorcycle, it's not the place to learn. Use Grab or the 'songthaews'.

Rental Scam (Motorcycle/Jet Ski)

Before renting, take detailed photos and videos of any pre-existing scratches or damage. When you return it, they could try to blame you and charge you an exorbitant amount.
