Berat and Gjirokastër are the two great heritage banners of Albania. Berat dazzles with its historic neighborhoods of Mangalem and Gorica and its inhabited castle with Byzantine churches. Gjirokastër stands out for its fortified stone fortress houses from the Ottoman era (such as the Zekate House) and its traditional bazaar.

Northern Albania is the Eden of hiking in the Balkans. The glacial valleys of Theth and Valbona offer pristine alpine landscapes with waterfalls (such as Grunas Waterfall), pools of frozen water (the Blue Eye of Theth) and traditional defensive towers ('kulla').

Sail through Koman Lake Canyon

Considered one of the most spectacular boat trips in the world, the ferry crossing on the artificial lake of Koman runs between towering limestone rock walls and emerald green waters. The landscape is reminiscent of the Norwegian fjords in the heart of the Balkans and is the perfect gateway to the Valbona Valley.

Do the Valbona to Theth Trek

The queen route of the Albanian Alps (Bjeshkët e Nemuna or Cursed Mountains) connects two idyllic villages through the Valbona mountain pass (1,795 m). It's a challenging but unforgettable hike that rewards with panoramic views of karst peaks, lush beech forests, crystal-clear springs and the iconic stave church of Theth.

Get lost in the streets of Berat and Gjirokastër

Both cities are Ottoman jewels declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Berat dazzles with its stepped white houses full of windows overlooking the Osum River and its inhabited castle; while Gjirokastër captivates with its gray slate slab roofs, imposing military fortress and cobbled bazaar.

Explore the Butrint Archaeological Park

Located in front of the Greek island of Corfu and surrounded by a national lake park, Butrint is a journey through time where Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian vestiges coexist. Its classical theater, baptistery with mosaics, early Christian basilica and Cyclopean walls emerge among lush Mediterranean vegetation.

Enjoy the Coves of the Albanian Riviera

From the spectacular Llogara mountain pass to the border with Greece, the southwest coast displays paradisiacal beaches with white pebbles and transparent waters. Highlights include the bays of Dhërmi, Jale, Himarë, the wild beach of Gjipe (accessible by a canyon) and the islets of Ksamil facing the Ionian Sea.

Immerse yourself in Historical Memory in Bunk'Art and Tirana

Tirana is a city of fascinating contrasts. In Bunk'Art 1 and Bunk'Art 2, huge underground anti-nuclear bunkers built by dictator Enver Hoxha have been transformed into museums of contemporary art and political history. As evening falls, the lively Blloku neighborhood – once an exclusive residential area for the communist elite – vibrates with terraces, designer cafes and modern restaurants.

Tips for Culture & Heritage

Roaming and Mobile Data

Albania is not part of the European Union or the European Economic Area, so EU 'free roaming' rates do not apply to most operators. It is essential to deactivate mobile data before landing or crossing the border and buy a virtual eSIM or a local prepaid SIM card (Vodafone or One Albania) at a very good price.

Currency and Cash Payments

The official currency is the Albanian Lek (ALL). Although euros are often accepted in hotels and excursions, the exchange rate applied is often unfavorable. Furthermore, in family restaurants, cafes, transport and small businesses, card payment is not always available, so it is essential to always carry enough cash.

Transportation and Driving

To explore the country freely, it is best to rent a car. Local driving can be unpredictable and mountain roads have sharp curves that require patience. To get around by public transport, 'vans' (shared minibuses) are used, which do not have rigid schedules and leave when they are full.
