Balkan Flavors with Mediterranean Essence

Albanian cuisine is a tasty crossroads between the livestock tradition of the Balkans, the Ottoman heritage and the freshness of the Mediterranean diet. It stands out for the prominence of slow-roasted meats, vegetables from local gardens bathed in the sun, goat and sheep cheeses, extra virgin olive oil and artisanal filo dough.

Must-Try Dishes

Tave Kosi

The most emblematic national dish of Albania, originating from Elbasan. It consists of tender pieces of roast lamb baked in a clay pot along with rice and a creamy, fluffy sauce made of sour yogurt, eggs, butter and garlic.

Byrek

The king of street food and traditional breakfasts. Crispy cake with multiple very thin layers of filo dough, commonly filled with spinach and feta cheese ('Byrek me spinaq'), spiced minced meat or onion and tomato.

Fërgesë Tirane

Rustic and delicious stew typical of the capital made with roasted red and green peppers, ripe tomatoes and salty cheese ('gjizë' or cottage cheese), seasoned with garlic and baked in a clay pot until obtaining a thick and unctuous texture.

Qofte Fërguara

Traditional meatballs of minced beef or lamb kneaded with chopped onion, fresh mint, oregano and breadcrumbs, fried or grilled and served with fresh salad and tzatziki sauce.

Speca të Mbushura

Ripe garden peppers stuffed with an aromatic mixture of rice, spiced minced meat, poached onion and Mediterranean herbs, slowly cooked in the oven.

Peshk i Freskët of the Deti Fruit

Throughout the coastal strip of Saranda, Vlorë and Durrës, local fish (sea bass, sea bream) and shellfish (Butrint mussels, squid and prawns) are served freshly caught, grilled with garlic, lemon and fresh parsley.

Typical Drinks

Raki Rrushi

The national spirit par excellence, distilled mainly from grapes (or plums). Strong, aromatic and transparent, it is consumed as a welcome, digestif or aperitif on any social occasion.

Coffee

Turkish Coffee and Espresso

The coffee culture in Albania is almost a religion. You can drink Turkish-style coffee (dense and aromatic with the grounds at the bottom of the cup) or excellent Italian-style espresso coffees in the country's countless cafes and terraces.

Wine

Albanian Native Wines

Albania has an ancient winemaking tradition that dates back to the Illyrians. Native grape varieties stand out such as the red Kallmet (from northern Shkodër) and the Shesh (i Bardhë in whites and i Zi in reds), with excellent family wineries.

Dhallë

Traditional cold and very refreshing drink, made by mixing natural yogurt with water and a pinch of salt. It is perfect to accompany strong dishes or cool off on hot summer days.

Traditional Sweets

Baklava

Albanian Baklava

Thin, crispy layers of filo dough generously filled with chopped local walnuts and dipped in a thick sugar syrup flavored with lemon. It is the indispensable dessert at parties and celebrations.

Trileçe

One of the most popular cakes in the Balkans. It is a fluffy cake soaked in three types of milk (evaporated, condensed milk and cream) and covered with a shiny layer of soft caramel.

Shendetlie

Traditional and rustic cake made with walnuts, flour and pure honey, baked slowly and then bathed in a hot sugar syrup that gives it a moist and intense texture.

Kabuni

A historical and unique dessert made with rice toasted in butter, sweet meat broth, raisins, sugar, walnuts and cinnamon, an inheritance from traditional party tables.
