History
Origins
Founded as the Roman colony of Barcino in the 1st century BC, Barcelona grew to become one of the powers of the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages. Its commercial heyday left an impressive Gothic legacy, visible today in the heart of the city.
Development
In the 19th century, the industrial revolution and the Catalan cultural renaissance (the Renaixença) transformed the city. This breeding ground gave rise to Modernism, a unique artistic and architectural movement whose greatest exponent is Antoni Gaudí.
Modern era
The 1992 Olympic Games marked a before and after, promoting a profound urban modernization and projecting Barcelona as an iconic global destination and a cutting-edge city.

Local Beaches
La Barceloneta is the most famous, but also the most crowded. For a more local experience, go to Bogatell beach (quiet and sporty) or Mar Bella beach (popular in the LGBTQ+ community).
Neighborhood Festivals
If you travel in summer, check if it coincides with a neighborhood's 'Festa Major' (Gràcia in August is the most famous). The streets are decorated and there are free concerts.

Times are late. Lunch is between 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Dinner does not start before 9:00 p.m.
