History
Origins
In the Mayan era, Cozumel, or 'Kuzamil' (Land of the Swallows), was a sacred place of capital importance. It was the sanctuary of Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, fertility and childbirth. Mayan women from all over the empire made pilgrimages to the island to honor it. It was also a crucial port on the trade routes connecting Yucatán with the rest of Central America.
Development
After the Spanish conquest, the island was decimated by disease and pirate attacks, leaving it practically uninhabited for centuries. In the 20th century, it was a quiet fishing village. Its destiny changed forever in the 1960s, when oceanographer Jacques Cousteau declared its reefs one of the most spectacular places in the world for diving, attracting international attention.
Modern era
Since Cousteau's statement, Cozumel became a top-level diving destination. The development of cruise tourism transformed it into one of the most visited ports in the world. Despite growth and overcoming the ravages of hurricanes like Wilma (2005), the island has managed to protect much of its reef system through a marine national park, maintaining its identity as a natural paradise.

The East Side is Mandatory
Spend at least half a day exploring the 'other side' of the island. It's a completely different world, wild and beautiful. Stop at beach bars like Coconuts or Mezcalito's.
The Municipal Market for Breakfast
For an authentic and cheap breakfast or lunch, go to the Municipal Market in the center. There are several excellent food stalls inside.
Don't Touch the Corals (or anything)
The number one rule of diving and snorkeling: don't touch anything. Corals are living and fragile organisms. Your simple touch can kill them.
Life is slower here
Embrace the 'island rhythm'. Service may be more relaxed than at a Cancun resort. Enjoy it.
Constant Hydration
The Caribbean climate requires you to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially if you are diving or exploring the island.
Beware of the Sun
The sun reflects off the water and sand, making it very intense. Use sunscreen, a hat, and seek shade.
Be careful when driving a scooter
It is a popular way to explore, but be extremely careful. Always wear a helmet and be careful with potholes and taxi drivers.
Confirm Boat Time
If you are coming from a cruise, make sure of the difference between the 'ship time' and the local time in Cozumel. You don't want to miss your exit.
