History
Origins
Fez was founded in 789 by Idris I, a descendant of the Prophet who fled from the Abbasids and established the city as the capital of his kingdom. Initially, the city was divided into two nuclei, Fez el-Bali and Fez Jdid, which grew with the arrival of Andalusian and Arab immigrants during the 9th century, who contributed wealth and knowledge. The city became an important religious and cultural center of North Africa, with a diverse population that included Muslims, Jews and Christians.
Development
During the Middle Ages, Fez reached its peak under the Benimerin dynasty, which in 1250 made it the capital of the sultanate, promoting its urban and cultural development. The city was a center of learning and commerce, highlighting the University of Al Quaraouiyine. Despite temporarily losing prominence to Marrakesh, Fez maintained its religious and cultural importance. In the 16th century it suffered an earthquake in 1522, but was rebuilt and continued to grow under different dynasties.
Modern era
In the modern era, especially during the 20th century, Fez experienced French colonial influence with the creation of the Ville Nouvelle, a modern urban area that complemented the old medina. In recent decades, Fez has strengthened its role as a cultural and tourist center, preserving its historical heritage while adapting to contemporary challenges.
