History
Origins
Although with Iberian and Roman roots, Granada flourished as the capital of the Zirí kingdom in the 11th century. However, its peak came with the Nasrid dynasty, which from the 13th century until 1492 made it the capital of the last Muslim state of Al-Andalus.During this period its greatest treasure was built: the palace complex of the Alhambra.
Development
The taking of the city by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492 marked a turning point.A profound Christian transformation began, building the Cathedral and the Royal Chapel on the old mosque. The 19th century saw the romantic 'rediscovery' of the city by travelers such as Washington Irving, whose 'Tales of the Alhambra' catapulted it to world fame.
Modern era
The 20th century was marked by figures such as Federico García Lorca, whose murder at the beginning of the Civil War left an indelible wound.Today, Granada is a vibrant university city and one of Spain's most important tourist destinations, struggling to balance the preservation of its immense heritage with modern life.

The Mirador de San Nicolás is incredible but it is overcrowded. For an equally good and quieter view, go up to the Mirador de San Miguel Alto or look for the Carmen de la Victoria.
Visit a Carmen
The Cármenes are the traditional houses of the Albaicín with a garden and orchard. Many are private, but some like the Carmen de los Mártires can be visited and are an oasis of peace.
Understanding 'Mala Follá'
It's a kind of local humor, a kind of apathy or dry irony. Don't take it personally, it's not bad manners, it's a hallmark.
Horarios de Comida
The schedules are late. Lunch is around 2:00-3:30 p.m., and dinner doesn't start before 9:00 p.m. The siesta (shop closures from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.) is still common.
Vigila tus Pertenencias
In areas of high tourist concentration such as the Mirador de San Nicolás, the Cathedral or on buses, keep an eye on bags and wallets.
Ofrecimiento de Romero
It is common for gypsy women in tourist areas to offer you a sprig of rosemary 'for good luck' and then insistently ask you for money. Decline politely.
