History

Origins

Salzburg was first settled by Celts and later became a Roman settlement called Juvavum. The city's name comes from 'salt castle', reflecting its wealth from salt trading that dominated the region for centuries.

Development

During the medieval period, Salzburg became a powerful ecclesiastical principality ruled by prince-archbishops. The baroque architecture that defines the city today was largely built during the 17th and 18th centuries, funded by salt trade wealth.

Modern era

In 1816, Salzburg became part of Austria. The city gained international fame as Mozart's birthplace and later as the setting for 'The Sound of Music'. Today it's a major cultural center and tourist destination while maintaining its historic character.
