San Sebastián, known in Basque as Donostia, is a coastal city located in the province of Guipúzcoa, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country, in northern Spain. History
Origins
The origins of San Sebastián date back to Roman settlements between 50 and 200 AD, evidenced in excavations in the Old Town. Before the official founding of the town, remains of towns already existed from the 10th century, which indicates an early human occupation in the area. The city was officially founded in the Middle Ages, establishing itself as a small fishing port.
Development
During the Middle Ages, San Sebastián grew as a walled town and strategic port on the Cantabrian coast.In the 17th and 18th centuries it suffered several sieges and destructions, especially during the War of Succession and the War of Independence.In the 19th century, the city experienced significant urban and economic development, becoming an elite tourist destination thanks to its climate and landscape, with the construction of promenades, spas and French-style buildings that marked its stately character.
