Origins
The coastal territory was inhabited for millennia by the indigenous Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Lekwungen (Songhees and Esquimalt) First Nations, who took advantage of the rich marine resources, hunting seals and gathering camassia berries and bulbs in the Garry oak groves.
Development
Founded in 1843 by James Douglas as a fur trading post for the Hudson's Bay Company (Fort Victoria), the city experienced rapid growth during the Fraser River Gold Rush of 1858, becoming the main trading port and capital of the Crown Colony before joining the Canadian Confederation in 1871.
Modern era
Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, Victoria carefully preserved its valuable Edwardian and Victorian architectural heritage. Today it is a thriving center of public administration, university education of excellence (UVic), ecological tourism and a nascent technology sector.
