Zakynthos, known to the Venetians as 'The Flower of the Levant', is an island of overwhelming natural beauty. It's an Ionian paradise where steep white cliffs plunge into electric blue waters, and where golden sand beaches serve as a sanctuary for Caretta-Caretta sea turtles. Famous throughout the world for the iconic Shipwreck Beach (Navagio), Zakynthos is an island of two faces: on the one hand, a natural paradise of sea caves, rock arches and lush vegetation; on the other, a vibrant party center in places like Laganas. It is a destination that promises unforgettable postcards, encounters with nature and contagious vacation energy.

Historia

History

Origins

The island has references in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Its strategic position made it valuable to powers such as Athens and Sparta. However, its ancient legacy is less visible than on other islands due to seismic activity.

Development

The most defining period for the island's culture was the long Venetian rule (1484-1797). The Venetians called it 'Fiore di Levante' (Flower of the East) for its beauty and cultural richness, leaving a mark on architecture, music ('kantades') and cuisine. It subsequently passed through brief French rule and a British protectorate before joining Greece in 1864.

Modern era

In 1953, a catastrophic earthquake and subsequent fire almost completely destroyed the capital and most of the towns, erasing much of its Venetian architectural heritage. The city was meticulously rebuilt following the original plans. In recent decades, tourism has become the island's economic engine, driven by the incredible fame of Shipwreck Beach and the richness of its marine life, making it one of the most popular destinations in Greece.

Tips for Culture & Heritage

Find the 'face of Poseidon'

On the west coast, near Kampi, there is a rock formation on the cliffs that resembles a facial profile, known as the 'face of Poseidon'. A good place for a unique photo.

Visit an oil mill

Zakynthos produces excellent olive oil. Visit the Aristeon Oil Mill and Museum for a tasting and to learn about the production process.

Non-potable tap water

It is not recommended to drink tap water in Zakynthos. Buy bottled water.

Beware of mosquitoes

Being a green island, there may be mosquitoes. Bring repellent, especially at night.

Respect the turtles

Nesting beaches (such as Gerakas, Kalamaki) have strict rules. Don't stick umbrellas in the sand, don't stay on the beach at night, and don't use lights. The future of this species depends on it.
