Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, nestled in a mythical valley dominated by the colossal Mont Blanc massif (4,808 m), is the legendary epicenter of mountain sports and the cradle of modern mountaineering. Famous for its breathtaking glaciers such as the Mer de Glace, the dizzying Aiguille du Midi cable car and its unique off-piste descents in the world (such as the Vallée Blanche), Chamonix combines the international sporting atmosphere with Savoyard Belle Époque architectural charm.

Tips for Family

The First Cable Car to the Aiguille du Midi

Book the first cable car in the morning (between 6:30 and 7:30 depending on the season) to enjoy the summit of the Aiguille du Midi in absolute silence before the massive tour groups arrive and watch the sunrise illuminate the north face of Mont Blanc.

Walk from Montenvers to Plan de l'Aiguille (Grand Balcon Nord)

Take the train from Montenvers in the morning, visit the Mer de Glace and take the spectacular 2.5-hour walk along the 'Grand Balcon Nord' to the mid-station of the Aiguille du Midi to descend by cable car, enjoying continuous views of the glaciers.

Mountain Spirit and 'Bonjour'

On hiking trails it is a universal and unbreakable rule of courtesy to greet each hiker you meet with a 'Bonjour' or 'Bonne journée'.

Respect for Night Rest

In the mountain refuges and in the town, silence prevails from 10:00 p.m., since mountaineers begin ascents to glacial peaks between 2:00 and 4:00 in the morning.

Sun Protection and Glacier Glasses (Cat. 4)

At high altitudes and glaciers, the ultraviolet radiation reflected from the snow is extreme; It is imperative to wear specific high mountain category 4 sunglasses and SPF 50+ sunscreen to avoid 'snow ophthalmia' (temporary blindness due to a corneal burn).

Spring and Tap Water

Tap water throughout the valley is 100% drinkable, fresh and pure, coming directly from the alpine springs.

Caution in High Mountains and Off-piste

Never venture on glaciers such as the Vallée Blanche or off-piste without avalanche rescue equipment (DVA, shovel, probe, harness) and preferably with a certified guide from the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix.

Acclimatization and Rapid Depressurization

The cable car to the Aiguille du Midi ascends 2,800 meters in just 20 minutes until reaching 3,842 m; walk slowly, drink water and do not force your heart rate to avoid dizziness or mountain sickness.
